On anticipation of the extraordinary parliamentary elections, the Armenian police introduced amendments to the electoral lists, Armenian media reported. Compared with the lists for 2017, the number of voters has decreased by 13,552 people.
Thus, the total number of voters was 2,588,456 million people in 2017, of which 1.5 million participated in the elections. According to this year's data, the total number of voters is 2,574,786 million people.
This is indirect evidence that under the previous authorities the electoral lists were bloated. And when the authorities decided to update the lists, including deleting the names of the deceased, the picture has changed.
For such a little country as Armenia, decline in population able to vote in the amount of 13,552 in just one year is significant, in view of the population crisis which the country experiences. Unfavorable demographic situation in Armenia is not a surprise for anyone.
The population of Armenia after 1992 (3,633,300 people) regularly declined, and it was 2,972,900 people in 2018. The country has a low natural population growth: according to the World Fact Book of the United States CIA, Armenia is in the 170th place in the world in terms of this indicator.
Significant problems with demographics are also caused by external migration. Thus, according to a report on the demographic situation of the State Statistics Committee of Armenia, the average migration rate in the country is minus 24,800 people. Thus, almost 25,000 people leave the country annually, which, coupled with low population growth, promises serious demographic problems in the future.
According to the UN report from 2017 with demographic forecasts for the whole world and individual countries, which describes the dynamics of the Earth’s population change up to 2100, Armenia’s population will shrink to 1,848,572. No country can exist and preserve its statehood without citizens.
If the Armenian leadership fails in the near future to resolve the causes of the problems, in particular, the economic isolation of Armenia, the electoral lists will have to be inflated more than once.
