Azerbaijani wine is becoming more and more popular on international markets. Successful participation of the country's wine products at competitions and exhibitions in various countries of the world is another confirmation of this. Not so long ago, Azerbaijani wines were highly appreciated at the international competition in Italy.
“At the international competition in Tramont, Italy, Azerbaijani wines won a silver and bronze medal. In total there were more than 1200 participants, we presented 2 types of wine, and both deserved high marks. The fact that among the European wines Azerbaijan has been awarded such awards inspires us to new achievements, to further development of this direction,” Tariyel Panahov, Director of Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture told CBC.
The participation of wine producers at international festivals and exhibitions is supported by the state. So in November 2016, and in April of this year 460,000 manat was allocated from the state budget to support export. In November this year, China will host an exhibition of wines and alcoholic beverages. Within the framework of the event, there will be a degustation of world brands. The exhibition will be attended by Azerbaijani specialists as well.
“Participation of international experts at such events is necessary. It seems to me that we should take an active part in them, invite producers from other countries into the country, establish contacts with foreign colleagues. The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, often spoke about this in his speeches. At the moment, the supply of Azerbaijani wines abroad is increasing. We are working on the development of winemaking in the country,” Tariyel Panahov said.
The increase in wine exports is one of the priority areas in the country. Over the past year alone, more than 17 million dollars have been received from the export of cognac and wine products to the state budget. Over the first half of this year, more than 125 thousand decaliters of wine were exported. This is 20% more than last year. At the same time, the geography of exports as well as the variety of wines increases.
“Our traditional market is the CIS countries - Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and the Baltic countries. Now large deliveries of Azerbaijani wine are also being made to China. In this country, there is a very high demand for Azerbaijani wines. We also supply products to America. In Europe there is a demand for Azerbaijani pomegranate wine and wine from various grape varieties,” Panahov noted.
It is planned to increase the volume of wine production in Azerbaijan. In 2016, the country produced more than 980 decaliters of grape wine, which is 20% more than a year earlier.
